I'm pretty happy with it being my first real attempt. This is Spalted Maple from my own property. I had cut the tree down about 3 years ago and cut it up into roughly firewood size pieces then left it. I don't currently have a wood stove. I have no idea if was Spalted when I cut it down or not but I suspect it was mostly due to it being out in the weather for so long after being cut.
Spalting in wood is caused by fungal colonization of the wood tissue. Spalting occurs naturally in forests and wood piles exposed to the elements. The process is most commonly associated with hardwoods like maple, beech, birch, and poplar, with Spalted maple being particularly sought after due to its wide, white sapwood that provides an ideal canvas for fungal activity
Having a lot of fun with the carving thing. This will be in my Etsy shop in a few days when the finishing is done.
